Allis, WI
July 4 was
something special here. All we had to do
was walk outside and stand beside the coach to see 30 minutes of wonderful fireworks
ending in this big bang…
July 5 we
went with our friends, Kathy and Mark, to Summerfest 50 along the banks of Lake
Michigan. Milwaukee has been putting on
a music festival for 50 years and has had some fantastic artists play this gig;
names like B.B. King, The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney. This year the main performance on July 5 was
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, but we were too tired after a hot afternoon of
music and food, and left long before they appeared. We did see the Velveetatones, who were kinda
bluezy/jazzy and Pat McCurdy, who was a non-stop comedian/guitarist. Fun was had by all!
July 6, Mark
and Kathy were again our delightful tour guides. We drove all around the city and stopped in
to see the Basilica of Saint Josaphat. “Basilica
status is reserved for the largest, most beautiful and most historically
important churches” according to the Visitor Guide. The church was indeed inspiring.
Also, while driving
around we stopped at Usinger’s meat market.
They had all kinds of meats like smoked links, bratwurst and “fine
luncheon meats” such as Mortadella, Slicing Summers and Yachwurst. And, of course they had the usual meats like
bacon, ham, roast beef and pork chops. I
could go on, but you get the idea. Their
FAQ says “We manufacture about 125 different types of sausage.”
We also stopped
at Leon’s, according to Yelp the number 1 place for frozen custard, and it was
yummy. Frozen custard has more cream and
eggs than ice cream we’re told, and is very smooth and tasty.
